SECTION ON THE GENOCIDE CENTER

For years Dr. Bubnys has participated in the glorification of the outbreak of the Lithuanian Holocaust on 23 June 1941 (the 80th anniversary is fast approaching, begging the question whether the government will finally commemorate the victims rather than the perpetrators). In June 2020 he ignored warnings about the pandemic to sing the praises of Noreika and Škirpa to a crowd of far-right and neo-Nazi elements, speaking under a large poster featuring both their visages. His appointment this week comes just as Noreika’s granddaughter, American author Silvia Foti has released a major new book. revealing the bold and unvarnished truth about her grandfather’s legacy. The book is The Nazi’s Granddaughter: How I Discovered My Grandfather was a War Criminal.

Dr. Bubnys has also glorified the Nazi puppet “provisional government” of the summer of 1941, and has consistently downgraded local Holocaust collaboration while seeking wherever possible to blame the “Jewish police” for the horrors of the Vilna, Kovno, and Shavl (Šiauliai) ghettos, in the period after the murder of the Jewish residents of all of the hundreds of smaller communities in the second half of 1941 (map).

Defending History has covered many of his exploits over the years, including episodes in  2013 (more)  2014201520182019, and 2020. These and more reports are included in the section on Dr. Bubnys’s role in state Holocaust revisionism. See also the section on the Genocide Center, where he has been chief historian for many years.

Defending History’s has also published reviews of Dr. Bubnys’s state-sponsored books on the Vilna Ghetto, and on the Kovno (Kaunas) Ghetto.
